Juancarlos Sandoval

I build data-driven software — from RLS-secured Postgres schemas to ML classifiers and AI-assisted research tooling. Currently a research assistant studying how people learn with AI.

About

I graduated from CSU Bakersfield in May 2026 with a B.S. in Computer Science, after an earlier career detour — I hold a B.S. in Biological Science from UC Irvine and spent five years as a Project Manager at Kaiser Permanente, designing community health programs and analyzing behavioral survey data. That background shapes how I build now: I care about clean data, measurable outcomes, and tools that hold up under real users.

Today I split my time across two research labs at CSUB — one studying how AI tools shape student learning, the other investigating co-location techniques in multi-user VR — while tutoring undergrads in Data Structures and Discrete Math, and building full-stack projects on the side.

Experience

Research Assistant — Computer Perception Lab

Jan. 2026 – Present

California State University, Bakersfield

  • Conducting qualitative analysis on AI-assisted learning using survey data from 78 students across 3 CS course sections, each surveyed at 3 longitudinal time points.
  • Developed and iteratively refined a structured codebook to categorize teaching preferences, user attitudes, cognitive impacts, and barriers.
  • Applied thematic coding with participant-level tracking to distinguish instructional mechanisms from reported learning outcomes.
  • Co-authoring a first-author manuscript comparing human-developed and open-source codebooks for AI tutoring research.

Research Assistant — XR/VR Lab

Jan. 2026 – Present

California State University, Bakersfield

  • Investigated co-location techniques in VR using MeXanimaTor, a lab-built Unity platform, to enable synchronized group teleportation across shared virtual environments.
  • Designed and ran experimental sessions to identify causes of positional drift in multi-user VR interactions and evaluate spatial anchor solutions.
  • Leveraged AI tools for literature review, experimental documentation, and iterative analysis of findings.

Computer Science Tutor

Jan. 2026 – Present

California State University, Bakersfield

  • Provide weekly one-on-one tutoring to 8–10 undergraduates in Data Structures, Discrete Mathematics, and Programming.
  • Identify knowledge gaps and tailor explanations to reinforce core CS concepts through guided problem-solving.

Project Manager

Mar. 2017 – Jun. 2022

Kaiser Permanente  ·  previously Learning Specialist, Assistance Program Coordinator, College Intern (Oct. 2010 – Mar. 2017)

  • Designed and administered pre/post behavioral surveys across 3 community health initiatives; analyzed results in Excel to measure program impact and report to leadership.
  • Led Nutrition to Grow On (CDC) program across 3–5 schools annually for 5+ years, reaching 70–90 students per school.
  • Designed and facilitated youth academic programs — math tutoring, homework assistance, academic coaching, and a 7-week Work Preparatory Program with summer internship.
  • Built and maintained partnerships with libraries, Planned Parenthood, Parks & Recreation, and school districts.

Hackathons

Plot-A-Thon — CSU Channel Islands, CA

Feb. 2026
Best Overall Best Data Analysis Best Data Communication out of ~21 teams
  • Analyzed a 1,467-respondent gaming survey (114 attributes) across 4 platforms; cleaned inconsistencies and standardized datatypes across boolean and categorical variables.
  • Uncovered that active communicators discover music at 1.8× the rate of silent players (22.4% vs. 12.3%), suggesting multiplayer games as a high-ROI advertising channel reaching 600M+ potential listeners.
  • Cleaned and preprocessed multi-type survey data with Pandas and NumPy; visualized findings with Matplotlib and Seaborn into an accessibility-compliant infographic and video presentation.

Projects

Travyl

Sept. 2025 – Present

A collaborative trip-planning app with AI-parsed itineraries, built on a security-first Postgres schema.

  • Designed and owned a full PostgreSQL schema across 10+ interrelated tables — trips, activities, collaborators, itinerary edits, user travel profiles — with FK/check constraints and cascading deletes.
  • Implemented Row Level Security on all 10 tables; wrote SECURITY DEFINER functions for complex multi-table authorization, resolving RLS infinite recursion.
  • Built a role-based access system (viewer/editor/owner) with token-based invites and a full audit trail.
  • Optimized performance with targeted indexes and a GIN index on JSONB fields; backend uses AWS Bedrock (Claude) to parse natural language into structured itineraries.

Poisonous Mushroom Classification

Dec. 2025

A machine learning pipeline comparing classifiers on a large UCI dataset.

  • Achieved 99.93% cross-validation accuracy using KNN on the UCI Mushroom Dataset (60,000+ samples).
  • Preprocessed data using missing-value-based feature selection, normalization, PCA, and categorical association analysis.
  • Trained and compared KNN, Random Forest, and AdaBoost using 5-fold cross-validation, ROC-AUC, and confusion matrices.

Anime Database

May 2025

A relational database and web interface for character voting and match data.

  • Designed a relational schema for users, characters, and match data optimized for efficient queries.
  • Implemented SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers for insertion, voting, and entity relationships.
  • Built a dynamic, data-driven web interface connected to the backend database.
